Plea to resume pension for retired seamen and their widows

Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has dashed off a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with a plea to immediately start the pension scheme for the retired seafarers and the widows.

In the letter, the three-time Curtorim MLA drew attention of the Chief Minister that the retired Seafarers and the Widows of Seafarers have not received pension since October 2019.

“It is given to understand recipient of the above scheme used to receive      Rs 2500 per month and according to an estimate there are around 2500 intended beneficiaries for the aforesaid Goa Welfare/Pension Scheme for Seafarers “, he said.

Reginaldo pointed out that late CM Manohar Parrikar had formulated a scheme which was notified in 2012 and came into force in 2013 for the retired seafarers. The retired seamen and widows are fully dependent on this scheme for their daily living. “Along with the payment of 18 months arrear, I kindly appeal to you for  immediately getting  the payment started for the retired seafarers and  the widows of Seafarers under the Goa Welfare/Pension Scheme. Like the other people, the retired seafarers and their widows sustenance too have also been badly  affected by COVID-19”, he added.
