Launching a drive against drunken drivers to curb road accidents on December 31 night, Goa police registered 311 cases of drunken driving in the State.
During the drive which was launched jointly by traffic police and district police, vehicles and also documents of the violators were seized. Police will refer all the cases to court for prosecution and in the cases where excessive alcohol content of more than 200mg/100ml was found they will seek maximum punishment of imprisonment and suspension of the license of the driver.
The Panaji traffic police intercepted a tourist bus, carrying around 25 passengers, from Maharashtra at Divja Circle in Panaji and found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
It was also found that he was not carrying a proper license. The bus was detained and a case was booked against the driver.
The Director General of Police Muktesh Chander had issued an order to launch a special drive on the December 31 at various junctions in the State to curtail accidents caused due to drunken driving. Goa police had earlier conducted such big drives on many occasions since April of this year. In April this year around 185 cases of drunken driving were booked.
In July police booked 315 individuals for drunken driving in a special three-hour drive. In August police launched a crackdown against drunken drivers to curb road accidents with around 200 teams on the job.
Traffic police registered 132 cases in a drive which was launched on September 1 night. They said the drives will continue in future.
