Amidst questions raised on the efficiency of Goa police in the wake of attempted armed burglary at an unoccupied bungalow in Sancoale, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh has staunchly defended their record, proclaiming that Goa’s crime rate has taken a nosedive this year.
As regards the daring burglary, he said the probe is at the conclusive stage even as the suspects are still at large.
“The police responded to the situation quickly and prevented the crime. The criminals, to make good their escape, fired two rounds in the air. Investigation in the matter is at the conclusive stage,” he said. The Sancoale incident saw a home guard injured, which the police claim was not due to the gunshot but because he fell on the ground while chasing the bikers.
Regarding the crime stats of the current year, Singh maintained that there was a 38 per cent drop in January 2023. “This declining trend continued and in April 2023 the crime declined by 32 per cent in the North district and by 38 per cent in the South. Similarly, in the first fortnight of May 2023, there has been a decline of almost 35 per cent,” Singh said.
Cases of murder have dropped to almost 44 per cent and a decline of 22 per cent in snatching cases. “This despite the fact that Goa Police is busy handling G-20 events as well which require comprehensive security and law and order arrangements,” he said.
