Police crack whip, stop fish sale on PDA wholesale market road

MARGAO
The Goa police have finally cracked a whip against the illegal sale of fish along the road outside the wholesale fish market.

In a coordinated action, police from the Maina-Curtorim Police station and their Colva counterparts ensured that no trucks unloaded fish on the wholesale fish market road both outside the market as well as along the adjoining stretch at Seraulim.

With the police maintaining pressure by deploying policemen all along the wholesale fish market road, some of the fish trucks were believed to have later sold fish on the Nuvem-Verna highway.

Sources informed that most of these fish trucks have been coming from the neighbouring state of Maharashtra in the last few days despite the decision taken by the SGPDA to shut down the wholesale fish market. With the wholesale fish market remaining closed, these unscrupulous traders have been selling fish on the wholesale fish market road falling in the jurisdiction of the Margao Municipal Council thereby defeating the very purpose of SGPDA decision to shut down the market.

Taking cognizance of the concerns expressed in many quarters that the unregulated sale of fish along the wholesale fish market road may spread Covid amongst the buyers and sellers, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had issued an order on Thursday directing the municipal market inspectors to crack a whip against the illegal activity.
