CANACONA
Canacona police have detained two Tamil Nadu registered vehicles along with bore well drilling equipment while a bore well was being drilled at Polem in the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to sources, Polem locals were disturbed from their sleep with a huge sound and continuous barking of dogs in their vicinity late Monday night.
When a few locals came out at about 2 am, they found a bore well being drilled in a nearby field at Polem. The residents objected to this activity and notified the police.
A police team went to the site and detained two vehicles along with bore well drilling equipment.
Later in the evening, some officials from the Canacona Water Resources Department visited the site and carried out an inspection.
When contacted, a WRD source informed no application has been received nor has any permission been granted to drill the bore well in the area.
“The Canacona WRD office has received a complaint from locals in Polem regarding the drilling of a bore well in their vicinity, and this office is investigating the same,” said the WRD source.
The source informed the permission from WRD is a must under the Ground Water Act for an open well, bore well for domestic, commercial or agriculture/irrigation purpose.
“Even the existing age-old open wells, particularly house wells need registration from the WRD department and are required to be renewed every five years. The registration of these wells also helps in getting financial assistance under various government schemes for maintenance and repairs, etc.”, added the WRD source.
