2 councillors vie for deputy chief’s post in Mapusa council

MAPUSA

The opposition group in the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to make the election to the Vice Chairperson’s post a little lively by fielding councillor Anand Bhaidkar as their choice while as expected former market committee chairman and councillor Viraj Phadke will be the candidate of the ruling group.

MMC Chief Officer Amit Shirvoikar received two nominations for the post of Vice Chairperson on Tuesday.

Councillor Viraj Phadke filed two sets of nominations with councillors Sinath Raul and Chandrashekar Benkar proposing his name in each of the nomination sets.

Councillor Kamal D’Souza proposed the name of councillor Anand Bhaidkar for the election of the Vice Chairperson’s post.

The ruling BJP group councillor Viraj Phadke exuded confidence that his victory was a foregone conclusion but refused to disclose the number of councillors who will support him.

“I will win the election hands down. I will win by a big margin when the results are declared tomorrow,” Phadke said.

For the first time, the opposition group has decided to descend in the election arena and make life a trifle difficult for the ruling BJP group in the council.

While they did not field any candidate during the election of the chairperson which was held on December 31 last year, this time they have decided to test the waters.

“We have not one but three aces up our sleeves. We expect to put up a good show and give the ruling group candidate a run for his money,” a councillor from the opposition group said.
