Goa Police have arrested an inter-state criminal who is accused of several burglaries in the State and was reported on the verge of committing 10-11 more burglaries.
Addressing media persons in Porvorim, Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan said Sumer Satpal Sharma (40) is a native of Punjab but was residing in Bangalore.
“Recently, he had come to Goa to commit burglaries and was staying in Assagao. In the past, he had committed several burglaries at Old Goa, Porvorim, Mapusa and Bangalore. An amount of Rs 14 lakh was recovered from him,” said SP Valsan.
“During interrogation, the accused said he would roam around on a two-wheeler and would identify houses which are closed and would then commit burglaries. He had already identified about 10-11 houses for the purpose of burglaries.”
“Sharma is an expert in breaking into houses and stealing household items, money and valuables. He can complete a burglary within 20 minutes.”
“Due to effective patrolling, Old Goa police with inputs from Mapusa police and other police stations succeeded in nabbing Sharma while he was identifying the areas for the burglaries and thereby prevented further burglaries. Police have recovered tools used for burglaries from him,” said Valsan.

Goa Police launches ‘Kavach’ drive
PORVORIM: Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan has said Goa Police has launched a special ‘Kavach’ drive, under which police will set up pickets at important junctions and dark spots.
“Police have strengthened their intelligence network and intensified highway and two-wheeler patrolling activities. Besides, police are also mapping CCTV cameras to keep watch of criminals freed from the jail.”
“Police have also started analysing criminal data and are keeping surveillance on criminals. Last week, a meeting of shop owners and business people was held to appraise them about burglaries and take necessary steps to prevent burglaries,” said SP Valsan.
