Parking on the roadsides has become a menace for the residents and a traffic bottleneck, hampering the smooth flow of traffic.
Saturday saw the residents of Arlem-Raia inspecting the road near Arlem circle and clearing the heavy vehicles parked on the roadside. At Margao, Digambar Kamat issued strict instructions to the authorities to keep the busy station road free from double parking and rid the roadside of the vegetable market.
At the Arlem circle, Margao Traffic Cell in-charge, PI Gautam Salunke descended on Saturday morning along with officials of the Maina-Curtorim police station and Raia panchayat members, Xavier Fernandes, Mingelina and social worker Anthony Barbosa to inspect the circle in view of parking by heavy vehicles.
The team found to their shock and surprise that only the heavy vehicles, but around three abandoned vehicles were parked along the roadside on the Arlem-Ponda road. The inspection also found a couple of vendors selling tender coconuts and other items.
PI Salunke told the media that heavy vehicles are parked on the Arlem-Ponda road since the time the authorities cleared the Arlem-Nuvem road of parking by heavy vehicles. “Since there have been complaints from Raia villagers on the menace of roadside parking, we have today cleared the vehicles parked along the Arlem-Ponda road,” he said.
He said the police will tow away the three abandoned vehicles if the Raia panchayat is ready to provide space to park the towed vehicles.
Social worker Anthony Barbosa informed that the issue had figured at the Raia panchayat gram sabha meeting held on last Sunday, wherein members had raised the issue of illegal parking at the Arlem circle.
He said the road should be immediately cleared of the vehicles since they not only pose a nuisance but are obstructing traffic.
Margao MLA issues a week’s deadline to clear vendors, parking along Station road
MARGAO: With the busy station road turning into a traffic bottleneck due to double parking on the road and the sale of vegetables along the roadside, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Saturday issued a week’s deadline to the police and the Margao Municipality to ensure that the station road becomes motorable once again. The Margao MLA issued the directions following complaints from citizens and businessmen over the sorry state of affairs on the station road, with vendors taking over the road with vegetables and fruits, besides double parking by vehicles.
“I want the Station road to be motorable once again. I was born and brought up at Station road. Sadly, the road has become a vegetable market today,” Kamat said.
The MLA warned that strict action against the illegal vendors selling vegetables and fruits on the road.
