As increasing road accidents are raising safety concerns also as unlicensed and underage drivers are involved in fatal crashes, Goa Police is contemplating writing to the government to ensure driving license tests are more made stringent than before.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Goa Police Raising Day function at its headquarters on Tuesday, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility.
"Enforcement is not the only way to curb road accidents. Unless we put trained drivers on the road, who understand traffic rules, road engineering, etc, fatalities cannot stop. Therefore, we will strongly recommend to the government that the license issuing system be very, very stringent," he said.
The DGP further said that the Transport Department, Public Works Department, and the civil society at large besides the police have the collective responsibility towards road safety.
"When a driving instructor and the officer taking a driving test of the person behind the wheel are 100 per cent confident that the latter is capable of driving safely, should issue the license. As far as the police are concerned, enforcement and regulation will be enhanced," he added.
The police department, he said will also consider suggestions submitted by the general public, NGOs and activists during a special programme held two months ago, to reduce accidents.
In the meanwhile, it has sent a compilation of all the suggestions to the Transport Department for further action.
The DGP also spoke about the highest detection rate in Goa and the ongoing drive against the drug menace.
