Even as most politicians are busy with the upcoming Canacona Muniucipal Council (CMC) polls, politics was also at work in two village panchayats of Canacona taluka.
Close supporters of Canacona MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar ensured the smooth transfer of power at Gaondongrim panchayat, by getting his confidante, Puno Govind Gaonkar, elected unopposed as the new sarpanch.
Former sarpanch Umesh Velip was reportedly asked to submit his resignation last month, to make way for Puno Gaonkar until the next elections, sources informed The Goan.
At a specially-convened meeting on Monday, Puno was unopposed and BDO observer Padmanabh Dessai declared him elected as new sarpanch of Gaondongrim.
Elsewhere, Khola Sarpanch Anjali Velip had put in her resignation papers last week following an arrangement among the nine panchas, and her resignation is likely to be effective this week.
As Khola is part of Quepem constituency, Quepem's Congress MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar is reportedly in favour of one amicable leader, while Canacona MLA Tawadkar, who also has clout in the area, is reportedly in favour of another panch to lead the panchayat until the next elections.
