The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has come on to the conclusion that no separate sewerage connection is required for shacks as it is impractical to have such connection but the shacks should instead have a proper discharge holding tank facility.
The Board has decided to follow up on whether the shacks are having holding tanks for the discharge of sewage.
In a recently held 146th board meeting, members of the board discussed whether it should be made mandatory for the shacks to connect their sewage tank to the sewerage line and came on to the conclusion that such a condition is impractical.
Member Secretary of GSPCB, Dr Shamila Monteiro in the meeting informed the board members that shack business is seasonal in nature so it would not be feasible to draw a sewerage line as the shacks are on the beachside and laying the pipeline will have to be crossed to some private properties and through the sand dunes, which is not permitted as per CRZ regulations.
The licensing authority for shacks is the Tourism department so the board has decided that it is up to the Tourism department to see that the shacks contain a facility of a tank for the discharge of sewage. The pollution board decided to monitor this implementation through follow up with the Tourism department.
