The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued a notice to the Ponda police for alleged inaction in a complaint of an attack on a family over a property dispute at Bethora.

The incident prompted the family, comprising a widow and her children, to flee to another place.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the GHRC directed the police inspector to appear in person or submit a reply through a representative by March 7.

“The Commission takes suo motu cognizance of this matter and directs to issue notice to the PI, Ponda Police Station to submit a reply and to remain present for a hearing on March 7 at 10:30 am,” the order by Acting Chairperson Desmond D’Costa and Member Pramod Kamat states.

In view of this, the GHRC Secretary has asked the PI to either appear before the Commission in person or through his representative duly authorized to appear and submit a reply in response to the notice on the given date.

As per the news report, the victim family has relocated after their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

One of the children has also written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant seeking intervention and alleging that the police have failed to act against his uncle, who has been attacking them violently over the property dispute.
