The sub-district hospital, Ponda was handed over without proper commissioning of the Sewage Treatment Plant, the health minister admitted before the House. He was responding to the calling attention motion moved by Ponda MLA Ravi Naik about the deplorable condition of the hospital due to overflowing chambers of sewerage pipeline and bad infrastructure, especially the deteriorating condition of the ladies toilet.
Health Minister informed the House that the contract to run the STP was given by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation to one Ion Exchange. "It was then decided along with the PWD to lift the sewage with the help of night soil tankers from January 2017 onwards," the minister has stated in his reply adding that a massive overflow towards the end of July led to a halt in this activity on the orders of the PWD.
As a temporary measure following public outcry over the issue, the work was thereafter handed over to one person till November end. However, leakage was noticed again in the first week of December. The matter has been on track since December 7.
The Health Minister has now promised a joint meeting with Ponda MLA Naik and officers of GSIDC as well as Directorate of Health Services in order to seek out a permanent solution to the long-standing issue.
He also informed that the government has approved the plan to entrust maintenance work of the hospital to GSIDC.
Ponda MLA was further assured that the broken doors of the ladies' toilets would
be fixed by the end of
January 2018.
