With unseasonal rains damaging cashew cultivations in Sattari, Poriem MLA Deviya Rane has petitioned Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for the government’s financial relief to cashew growers in the taluka.
Local cashew cultivators have complained of a sharp drop in cashew nut production due to unseasonal rains and climate changes, estimating that this year's cashew production has been only 30 per cent.
There are a large number of cashew growers in Sattari and about 70% of them depend solely on seasonal cashew production for a livelihood.
When contacted, Poriem MLA Divya Rane said she is fully aware of the problems faced by the cashew cultivators.
“After interacting with cashew growers through various programmes in the last eight days, I have learnt that there has been a huge drop in this year's cashew production.”
“I have written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for financial relief from the government to these cashew growers. We will continue to pursue this issue with the government so that cashew cultivators get some compensation for their losses,” said Rane.
