Barely a day after a portion of the ceiling collapsed outside a shop in the Mapusa market on Friday afternoon, a concrete portion of the staircase of a building near the vegetable market collapsed a few hours later on Saturday morning.
Fortunately, no one was near the staircase at the time of the incident and a major accident was averted. The fallen concrete pieces of the staircase were later removed by municipal workers.
Shops conduct business activity on the ground floor and first floor of the two-storeyed building, but due to lack of electricity and water connection, no one has taken possession of the shops on the second floor as yet.
The building is currently in a dilapidated condition and earlier during unseasonal rains on May 22, a concrete portion of the second-floor balcony had collapsed. After that, the Mapusa Municipal Council closed the shops below the balcony and had installed a bamboo fence for safety. After repairing the balcony, the municipality removed the fence.
