Speed cameras have been installed on the six-lane Porvorim elevated corridor following a fatal crash that claimed two lives within 24 hours of the flyover being opened to traffic and another non-injury accident a day later.
Amid concerns over speeding and road safety on the stretch, two cameras were installed on Tuesday after officials from the Public Works Department, Transport Department and Traffic Police conducted another inspection. A third speed camera was installed on the descending stretch towards Porvorim from Atal Setu.
Traffic police said the cameras would enable closer monitoring of vehicle speeds and violations, particularly on the elevated corridor, where the notified speed limit is 65 kmph.
The move comes after an accident near Neo Majestic Hotel last Saturday evening saw two deaths. As per police records, a car allegedly travelling rashly hit the scooter from behind, pushing it into a truck entering the National Highway towards Atal Setu. The scooter rider and one occupant of the car were killed, while two others were injured.
PWD Minister Digambar Kamat had earlier said that an intercepting radar was installed as an immediate measure to monitor speeds, with cameras to follow. “The notified speed limit is 65 kmph. We will take more steps soon. Cameras will also be installed,” Kamat had said, after he inspected the site on the following day of the fatal crash.
Authorities have since tightened traffic movement on the corridor, including a ban on two-wheelers. Entry and exit points connecting the service roads at Guirim and Majestic are also shut. Traffic police personnel are maintaining a constant vigil on the stretch as further safety measures are implemented.
