A group of residents from Porvorim have decided to march with their buckets to the PWD office opposite Porvorim Primary Health Centre on Wednesday to protest against acute water shortage in Porvorim.
Speaking to The Goan, some residents said most parts of Porvorim did not receive water supply on Monday, forcing them to hire private water tankers by paying around Rs 600-800 per tanker.
They did not receive water supply even on Tuesday morning and many upset residents decided to register their protest by marching towards PWD office with buckets on Wednesday.
When contacted, PWD Executive Engineer Nitin Nevrekar clarified there no water shortage in Porvorim at present.
“Porvorim receives 16 MLD water from Assnora Treatment Plant daily. On Monday, there was no water supply to Porvorim mainly because the PWD was busy repairing all valves.”
“The water pipeline which carries water to Porvorim got damaged several times while road widening work was in progress, due which mud got deposited in the valves. Hence, most valves were clogged and water was not getting pumped to overhead water tanks with the required pressure.”
“The PWD, therefore, undertook cleaning and repairing of all valves and hence, we could not supply water to residents of Porvorim on Monday,” explained Nevrekar.
He informed that pumping of water to overhead tanks start early at 3 in the morning.
“Unfortunately on Tuesday, there was no power supply from 3.15 am to 6.15 am as the fuse on the electricity pole got damaged near the water reservoir.”
“The matter was immediately informed to the electricity department, but they took a long time to repair the damaged fuse on the electricity pole. The fuse was repaired around 6.15 am and hence, there was a delay in releasing the water supply to residents.”
“We released water to all parts of Porvorim on Tuesday and there is no shortage of water to Porvorim,” assured Nevrekar.
