The Covid-19 vaccination drive began at Porvorim on Wednesday, with doctors, nurses and paramedical staff of Porvorim Primary Health Centre (PHC) getting the first shot of Covishield vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India, Pune.
Other doctors and paramedical staff from North Goa who have registered with the Co-WIN App were also given the vaccines at the Porvorim PHC.
Speaking to The Goan, PHC Health officer Dr Vikas Naik said he had taken the first dose of Covishield vaccine on January 25.
“I did not get any side effects. This vaccine has been approved by Indian Council of Medical Research and as per directions by the Union Health Ministry the vaccines will be offered first to healthcare workers, frontline workers and to persons above 50 years, followed by persons below 50 years of age with associated co-morbidities and finally to the general public,” said Dr Naik.
Dr Naik mentioned that getting vaccinated for Covid-19 is voluntary, but said it is advisable to get vaccinated as it will develop a strong immune response against the disease.
“The second dose is given after 28 days. It is said the protective level of antibodies generally develops two weeks after receiving the second dose. There maybe mild side effects such as pain at the place of vaccination, mild fever, fatigue, headache and vomiting in some cases, but people should not worry.”
“With proper medication, the person fully recovers within 48 hours. So far, severe side effects such as anaphylaxis which is life threatening has not been reported in Goa,” said Dr Naik.
