PORVORIM
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said work on the 15 MLD Water Treatment Plant at Porvorim is nearing completion and considering water shortage in the area, has assured to direct the PWD to partially commission this plant and release 5 MLD of water to Porvorim by March-end.

Responding to concerns raised by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte after laying the foundation stone for the Lekha Bhavan, the administrative complex for the Directorate of Accounts, Sawant said important ongoing projects in Porvorim would also be completed soon.

“The government is fully aware that the addition of new complexes will add further load on infrastructures like power and water.”

“I have directed the GSIDC to improve this basic infrastructure before setting up of new projects in Porvorim to avoid hardship to the people,” said Sawant.

Earlier, Porvorim MLA expressed happiness that the Lekha Bhavan project is being set up in Porvorim.

“With every new project, the load on basic infrastructures such as water, power, garbage and sewerage is on the rise. The government should take basic infrastructure needs into account before embarking on new projects,” said Khaunte.

Stating that the water requirement of Porvorim is 21 MLD, Khaunte said the area presently receives only 13-16 MLD and emphasised the need to complete the water treatment plant at Porvorim at the earliest.

“Many projects such as the new market complex, sports complex and fire station is progressing at snail’s pace. These projects need to be completed immediately,” Khaunte added.

GSIDC Vice-Chairperson and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza said Porvorim has now become an educational and commercial hub.

“This new Lekha Bhavan project and the high court project will enhance the importance of Porvorim. The GSIDC will endeavour to complete the Lekha Bhavan project within 18 months,” said D’Souza.
