Porvorim’s Service Road junction turns into an accident-prone zone

Porvorim’s Service Road junction turns into an accident-prone zone

PORVORIM

The Service Road junction near traffic signal at the entrance of the Housing Board Colony, Porvorim, has become an accident-prone zone.

The vehicles from Housing Board Colony proceeding towards Panjim-Mapusa highway have to cross two roads namely Service Road and Mapusa-Panjim highway. The vehicles proceeding towards Panjim from Mapusa after crossing the Mall de Goa take left turn and use service road to proceed towards Panaji.

Hence there is heavy movement of vehicular traffic on the service road. Secondly, when the traffic signal at the entrance of Housing Board Colony flashes the red light some vehicle owners going towards Panjim instead of stopping their vehicles take a left turn immediately and use service road to proceed to Panaji. This results in traffic congestion at the service road junction especially during peak hours. Hence there is a need to erect speed breakers on both the sides of the Service Road at the entrance of the Housing Board.

On February 4, 2018, Porvorim Rising had organised a meeting with the Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte and residents of wards 8, 9 and 10 to hear the grievances.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Collector of Mapusa Gaurish Shankhwalker, Joint Mamlatdar Sripad Mhajik, Police Sub-Inspector Nikhil Palyekar and Assistant Engineer of Public Works Department R S Naik. In this meeting the

residents had highlighted the aforesaid problem and demanded erection of the speed breakers at the service road junction.

Khaunte has requested the aforesaid government authorities to look into this matter.

During peak hours accidents have become a regular feature at the aforesaid service road junction.

Hence the residents demand that authorities concerned should act immediately and erect two speed breakers at the service road junction to avoid accidents.
