Post offices on systems drive, to be shut for 2 days

Post offices on systems drive, to be shut for 2 days

PANAJI: All the 104 post offices in Goa will remain closed for two whole days to facilitate up-gradation of the system software in Goa.
The decision which is likely to inconvenience those who use the services, has been announced abruptly just a day ahead of the closure.
"The entire Goa postal division will be migrating to new software and therefore all post offices will remain closed on September 20 and 21," said Archana Gopinath, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mapusa.
The postal department has embarked on a plan to upgrade its computer systems phase wise to update data and offer better and faster services to the public.
"The up-gradation of the system will take place in phases and this is just the beginning. This migration will improve the system and help the department to provide better services to the people," Gopinath said.
Notices have also been put up outside Goa's 104 post offices to inform the public, but are yet expected to inconvenience users of the service with mail likely to be delayed and services including financial services offered by the post offices expected to be affected.
The timing of the intimation coming as it does a day ahead of the two days shutdown has left little time for the message to filter through to those who might need it most.
Prominent post offices including that of the Panaji head office, that of Mapusa, Margao, Calangute and others which see hectic activity will also remain closed for services.

Why not upgrade
at late night
hours, say users

PANAJI: Users have questioned the duration of the time required for the upgrade pointing to the fact that software updates on several large institutions including banks and others are conducted during a prearranged downtime that is often scheduled at the late hours of the night to inconvenience as few users as possible and is often for a brief duration usually between two to six hours.
