Post the major accident at the Chimbel junction involving seven vehicles that claimed the life of a youth and left three injured, the government machinery got down to work overtime to find a solution to the long-pending issue.
On Friday morning, Tiswadi Mamlatdar Franklyn Ferrao along with DySP traffic Dharmesh Angle, PWD officials, panchayat authorities and locals conducted an inspection of the junction with locals placing their suggestions.
However, no concrete decision could be arrived at, but some locals informed The Goan that they have urged authorities to install signboards showing speed limit, accident-prone junction as well as traffic signals as temporary measures on immediate basis.
Speaking to The Goan, ZP member Sandeep Vernekar said apart from these suggestions, he has also asked for dividers to be installed from the Kadamba road slope right up to the junction so that vehicles stay in their lane.
“We have also suggested that road widening should be done on one side of the road where ample space is available so that the curve is done away with,” Vernekar informed.
“With the curve gone and the road straightened, the drivers of the vehicles will have clear visibility of the junction as well as the approaching vehicles,” he said and added that cutting of trees which are blocking the view has also been
suggested.
“Authorities concerned have agreed to work out these temporary measures on an urgent basis and we are going to wait till the actual groundwork begins,” Vernekar concluded.
Meanwhile, after the site inspection, a meeting was convened at the North Goa Collector R Menaka’s office wherein various officials concerned, Chimbel panchayat authorities and some locals participated.
Speaking to The Goan, Chimbel Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar said it was decided to meet again on Monday in the panchayat office along with the plan and then proceed at the site to chalk out future course of action.
Kunkolkar informed that the collector has directed all officials concerned like PWD, traffic, police, RTO, Mamlatdar and others to remain present for the meeting.
“The Collector has also directed to serve notices to the Immaculate Conception Chapel committee as well as the person who has objected to the flyover construction so that they remain present and have their say in the matter,” Kunkolkar said.
