Power surge damages gadgets worth lakhs in 40 Ponda houses

PONDA

About 40 families in Sainagar-Gangem in Ponda taluka were left fuming after a power surge damaged their household appliances barely days ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.

According to sources, the transformer developed a fault at Sainagar on Thursday evening and there was a surge in power supply at Sainagar. Home appliances like refrigerators, fans, television sets and other equipment worth lakhs of rupees were damaged in about 40 homes.

The people, who had been decorating their homes and preparing for the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, have complained that they would have to incur additional expenses to repair or replace the damaged appliances.

“Due to high voltage, people in the area had to face heavy losses as all electrical equipment in our homes stopped working. People had to spend the evening and night in darkness. The government should take notice of this incident and pay us compensation,” remarked Bharat Naik from Sainagar.

On Friday afternoon, a new transformer was installed, and power supply was restored in the area. Workers from the electricity department monitored the transformer till late night.
