Against the backdrop of serious accidents resulting from drunk driving, the State government has urged partygoers -- whether locals or tourists -- to opt for cab services instead of driving themselves back home or hotels.
During the launch of the Goa Taxi App on Friday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized that using taxi services could significantly decrease road accidents.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, also present at the event, had a similar view stating that while the party life is a significant aspect of tourism, it is essential for everyone, including locals, to prioritize safety.
“When we talk about tourism, the party life comes to the fore… If you want to attend a party, go, but you should know someone at home is waiting for you. It is for everyone’s safety…even the locals,” Khaunte said.
Sawant further added the taxi app, which until the pan-Goa launch was available at Manohar International Airport, Mopa, will play a crucial role in reducing accidents. “You all will know how this app will help,” the CM added.
The State has been witnessing a series of drunken driving cases as the most controversial Banastarim mishap involving a prominent family continues to grab media attention. This horrific accident on August 6 killed three motorists including a couple and a youth whereas three others sustained serious injuries.
Speaking about the App, which the government asserted is for the local taxi owners/drivers, Sawant said they have brought technology into the tourism sector.
“We cannot survive without technology,” he said with Khaunte adding that stakeholders will have to get accustomed to the technology to stand strong in the competitive business”, he said.
“This App has already been operational at the Mopa Taxi counter for the last six months and around 1,000 taxi operators have already joined the App. Those who are affiliated with this App will get benefits like a widow scheme, pension scheme, financial help for marriage, and also scholarships for their children after the taxi association has proposed these schemes,” the minister said.
The government is optimistic that with the App, which will now compete with the GoaMiles and local cab services, the number of tourists will increase in the State once they are assured about their safety. The cost of travelling by taxi will also be reduced with the use of technology, Sawant added.
The App, developed free of cost by the government, also has features for women's safety and feedback after each ride.
