MAPUSA
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has commenced pre-monsoon desilting work across all 20 municipal wards to prevent waterlogging during the rainy season.
The first round of desilting is currently underway and is expected to be completed soon.
In a proactive move, MMC has adopted a systematic approach, tackling the cleaning process in two wards at a time.
For instance, work began simultaneously in Ward 1 and Ward 11 on the first day, with the same pattern being followed until all wards are covered.
To execute the task efficiently, a structured timetable has been prepared, and two teams of ten labourers “ comprising five men and five women “ along with a supervisor have been assigned to each round of desilting.
Additionally, the council has floated a tender for a second phase of desilting, which will cover all municipal drains, including those in the market area. Furthermore, the Water Resources Department will undertake the desilting of 18 major nullahs across different wards under MMC’s jurisdiction.
Chairperson Priya Mishal confirmed that the council is committed to ensuring the drains are cleaned ahead of the monsoon.
“Desilting work is being carried out in all municipal wards, with two wards being tackled simultaneously by teams of labourers. We expect to complete the first round soon,” she said.
She further stated that a second round of desilting will also be undertaken, for which a tender has been issued, ensuring all drains, including those in the municipal market, are thoroughly cleaned before the rains arrive.
