GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday said it was unfortunate that people have been facing a financial crisis during Ganesh Chaturthi on account of price hikes in various essential goods and services.
“The price of fuel and LPG cylinders have skyrocketed and this has led to a price rise in all other commodities, including groceries and vegetables. The financial crisis has dampened the spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi,” Amonkar told reporters.
“During the Congress government, vegetables and groceries were provided at subsidised rates during festivals, irrespective of religion. Today, families may want to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi but they have to think twice because prices of all items have doubled and have made things difficult for them.”
Amonkar also hit out at BJP legislators for distributing groceries during festivals and in an election year.
“We have seen many BJP legislators distributing groceries in an election year and that too, in a pick and choose fashion. These groceries are given only to select people. Legislators should be giving groceries to all people, especially because people are short of money and many have either lost jobs or are on reduced salaries due to the pandemic,” said Amonkar.
