PORVORIM
Porvorim Police Sub Inspector Viraj Sawant has been transferred to the GRP at Altinho-Panaji and departmental action has been initiated against him after a video allegedly showing him threatening staff at a bar and restaurant in Alto-Porvorim went viral on social media on Wednesday.
According to Porvorim police sources, the restaurant owner said the incident took place last week when PSI Sawant visited the restaurant with a friend.
The video reportedly shows the two men arguing with restaurant staff over the price of an item. The owner was also allegedly warned that he could face police action if the establishment remained open after 11 pm.
The two men reportedly returned to the restaurant later, with Sawant allegedly hurling abuses. The owner subsequently filed a police complaint.
Following the video going viral and the matter being raised in the Assembly, Sawant was transferred to the GRP at Altinho and departmental action was initiated against him.
Sources said Sawant had previously been posted at Mopa and was transferred to Porvorim police station in mid-July. Police have summoned his friend and recorded his statement.
Asked whether an FIR had been registered, Porvorim Police Inspector Tukaram Chawan told the media that the inquiry was still under way and no FIR had been registered.
Denying allegations of political pressure to prevent registration of an FIR, Chawan said, “There is no pressure at all. We are conducting the inquiry and will take action.”
Police said further departmental action would depend on the findings of the inquiry.
