Probe into bullfights after Colva incident

Cops told to identify organisers

MARGAO

The banned bullfights taking place in the jurisdiction of Colva police station have drawn the attention of the South district authorities. Additional Collector (South) Ramesh Gaonkar on Wednesday issued a memorandum calling for strict compliance with the High Court’s directions on the ban.

He has directed the Police Inspector, Colva Police Station, to carry out a thorough investigation into the case already registered and to identify the organisers, landowners and participants involved in the illegal bullfights.

The Deputy Collector and SDM II have been asked to strictly monitor prohibitory orders, if required, to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. They have also been told to convene coordination meetings with the police and panchayat authorities for surveillance and intelligence gathering. The Additional Collector has instructed the police to submit a report within five days, warning that any violation of the High Court’s directions will be viewed seriously and personal responsibility will be fixed for lapses in enforcement. The memorandum comes after South Goa District Collector Egna Cleetus, IAS, took strong cognisance of the banned bullfights. Police had earlier registered a case after a video showed a bullfight being held at Colva.
