Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced a comprehensive inquiry into the deaths of two workers at Cipla’s facility in the Verna Industrial Estate and assured that the families of the deceased would receive maximum compensation.
This statement was made on the floor of the House, reflecting the government’s commitment to worker safety and accountability in industrial operations.
“I have ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident at Cipla, involving the departments of factories and boilers, labour and employment, industries and the police. Such incidents must not recur and all departments must take necessary precautions to prioritize safety,” said Sawant.
He emphasized the government’s stance that safety is paramount and assured that measures would be taken to prevent future accidents.
The Chief Minister also pledged to ensure that the families of the two deceased workers would receive substantial compensation. “We will ensure they get maximum compensation from the company and insurance,” Sawant stated, highlighting the government’s support for the affected families during this tragic time.
The issue was raised during the Zero Hour by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, who expressed serious concerns about the negligence of government authorities and the gross violations by industrial units that endanger workers’ lives.
Alemao cited the deaths at Cipla as a stark example of industrial carelessness and called for immediate action. “The death of two workers at Cipla in Verna Industrial Estate is a living example of the carelessness of industrial units. The government needs to immediately conduct a high-level inquiry into the fatal accident at Verna Industrial Estate and take proactive steps to ensure that safety standards are strictly adhered to by all industrial units in Goa,” Alemao asserted.
He further alleged that similar safety issues exist at Zuari Agro, where plants of Urea, DAP, and NPK were reportedly unsafe. He urged the government to enforce strict compliance with safety regulations and ensure that industrial units prioritize the well-being of their employees.
