Project to rehabilitate displaced GMC kiosk owners nears completion

Project to rehabilitate displaced GMC kiosk owners nears completion

OLD GOA
Nearly eight months after being displaced in the demolition drive that took place on July 1 last year, the rehabilitation project undertaken by the government is nearing completion.

Speaking to The Goan, a kiosk owner Domnic Pereira informed that he has been informed that the project would be completed in another week’s time.

“The contractor has informed that it would take another week’s time to complete the rehabilitation project. After that, the contractor will send a report to the deputy collector citing completion of the project,” Pereira informed.

“The process of allotting the shops to the displaced kiosk owners/vendors will only start after that,” Pereira added.

However, he raised suspicion that there is an attempt being made to include names of persons who were not at all affected by the demolition drive.

“After the contractor submits completion certificate, I will meet the deputy collector to ensure that only the genuine kiosk owners/vendors are rehabilitated,” Pereira said.

It may be recalled that the displaced GMC kiosk owners began a chain hunger strike in October last year demanding that the rehabilitation be done at the earliest.

However, the protest was suspended on January 11, after the PWD issued an ex-post facto order to the contractor for construction of the rehabilitation project.
