Panajir rSabina Martins of Bailancho Saad said, “The government has to ascertain the living conditions of mentally unsound people periodically, work out a mechanism to check whether the money from welfare schemes reaches the beneficiaries, while also hastening the process of setting up homes for vulnerable people, a one-stop crisis centre and a State Resource Centre for Women.” rMartins urged people to be sensitive to the sufferings of those around them and to report any violations of human rights to the authorities at the earliest. r“The government is dragging its feet in setting up the one-stop crisis centre next to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. The State Resource Centre for Women also needs to be set up on urgent basis so as to create awareness, conduct studies and research that will aid in policy formulation on women’s rights,” Martins stated. rBailancho Saad pointed out that the government has to work to create a support system in cases where women are treated badly and are sent home after a failed marriage, those who face domestic violence, people with disabilities and women who are deprived of property rights.
Protect women’s rights, urges Bailancho Saad
Against the backdrop of the rescue of Sunita Verlekar Shirodkar at Candolim, NGO ‘Bailancho Saad’ has put forth five prominent demands before the government, while urging the authorities to accord top priority in formulating the policy to protect women’s rights in the state.
