CANACONA
The top portion of the container (AP-28-TB-3905), which was proceeding from Mangalore to Panaji, brushed the central beam of protection barrier, which is erected by the KRC to protect the overhead railway bridge by highway traffic.
The horizontal beam of the protection barricade was hit by the container on the west side after it crossed the eastern side protection clamp and also crossed the KRC bridge before brushing and bringing down one side of the beam, while the other end hanged onto the diagonal post.
The traffic was disrupted for over half an hour, but later it was removed with the help of a crane.
Residents said the height gauge protection beam was already tilted on one side, which resulted in its contact with the container.
The locals called for inspection of all such measures put on place by KRC along the national highway and other roads to avert any tragedy.
“It would have been a tragedy if it had come down on a two wheeler and any vehicle,” complained a local resident, Samir Naik, who rushed to the site on learning about the incident.
The police helped to maintain the highway traffic following the incident till it was clear and the danger was removed from the highway.
