As part of their state-wide agitation against a number of mega projects in the State, a number of social groups held a public awareness meet in Aldona on Saturday evening.

Speakers from the Goencho Awaaz, Goencho Ekvott, Goenche Rakhandar and other groups addressed a large gathering and highlighted the dangers and consequences of many of the controversial projects proposed in the State.

They claimed that one of the many projects proposed under the Sagar Mala project involves a jetty to be built in Aldona, which would have widespread consequences for the village.

They also spoke on the coal-related projects and the double-tracking works being forced upon the people.

“The Adani company is trying to expand its coal operations and hence the double-tracking is being pushed in the State. Goans will not benefit from this at all, but instead there will be more coal transported to Karnataka through our State,” said Co-convenor of Goencho Awaz Capt Viriato Fernandes.

“All people need to firmly oppose these projects, as well as widening of NH and electricity lines which will have adverse effects on the environment,” he said.

Other speakers also highlighted the dangers of these projects for the State, the people and the environment. Some even expressed disappointment with the government for pushing ahead with the projects despite growing opposition and agitation by the people.
