Responding to demands by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation to restore water supply to industrial units in Verna, PWD Assistant Engineer S K Gaonkar on Wednesday stated the water supply had been stopped due to a damaged pipeline.
Speaking to reporters, Gaonkar also said the PWD had earlier informed the GIDC to undertake repairs of the damaged pipeline as water was being wasted.
“But since the repairs had not been taken up, the PWD had decided to stop the supply of water from Friday onwards. Water supply has been restored to the industrial units, but with a condition that the pipeline should be repaired immediately within a week,” said Gaonkar.
Gaonkar said the pipeline supplying water to the industrial units is damaged and whenever water is supplied to these units, there is wastage of water.
“We had informed them five months ago to repair the damaged pipeline to prevent wastage of water. Besides the wastage, the pressure of our supply also drops down considerably because of damaged pipeline.” “They have not yet repaired it and their meter also is not working. So, we decided to stop their water supply from Friday.”
“We have, however, received a request from them to restore the supply and that they are willing to repair the damaged pipeline and we have, accordingly, started the water supply to the units.”
“We have given them clear instructions to repair the pipeline within the next eight days, failing which we will have to stop the water supply,” said Gaonkar.
