Responding to a report in The Goan, the PWD on Monday began fencing works on the dangerous culvert along the NH17A at Sancoale.
Speaking to the media, former Chicalim sarpanch Nilima Naik said the PWD had acted faster than expected to safeguard vehicles plying on the road. “We had appealed to the PWD to take up fencing works at the culvert because many speeding vehicles braked abruptly at this site at the last moment after they realize that the culvert does not have a fence. We had feared that during the festive season, many motorists could face danger to life. However, the PWD acted immediately in the issue and we are thankful,” said Naik.
According to sources, the PWD assigned the work to an agency after a report appeared in The Goan, highlighting the dangerous culvert along the highway near Sancoale, after the boundary wall of the culvert was damaged and subsequently collapsed when a speeding car hit the wall some days earlier.
PWD AE(Highways) Vincent D’Souza had said the PWD would immediately act on providing some temporary protection, adding that estimates had been submitted for the work  including delimiters, side railing, curb stones and signages.
