The PWD on Friday morning stopped the work of a contractor laying cables for a defence project at Vaddem slope, after the workers damaged the main PWD water pipeline on Thursday, causing water supply issues to areas of Vaddem, New Vaddem and Chicalim.
The work was stopped by PWD Assistant Engineer S K Gaonkar, after he personally went to the site and inspected the damaged pipeline. Gaonkar also instructed the contractor’s staff that PWD would not allow any work to resume till the company involved in laying of the cable met the PWD.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Gaonkar said the workers had damaged the main water supply pipeline for a fourth time.
“A company has taken up the work to lay cables and is digging a trench at this area. They have damaged the pipeline for the fourth time on Thursday and people have had to pay a price for their carelessness during the festive season.”
“Water supply to areas of Vaddem, New Vaddem and Chicalim has been affected. They work at night and inform us after the pipeline is damaged. We come every time and conduct repairs, before they resume work and damage the pipeline again.”
Thus has become a regular affair and if they damage the pipeline again, water supply will be affected yet again as the pipeline is the main line supplying water to areas of Vaddem, New Vaddem and Chicalim,” said Gaonkar.
The PWD assistant engineer said they had stopped the work after workers had damaged the pipeline for the third time and had warned the contractor of filing a police complaint against them.
“After they damaged the pipeline again, I personally visited the site and stopped their work. They cannot take a department for granted and also cause inconvenience to others while working carelessly.”
“They have opened all pipelines here and are not following any directions. I had instructed the contractor to have trial pits but they are not listening and are constantly damaging the main water pipeline.”
“I have stopped their work and told them to inform their higher authority that we have stopped their work. We will not allow these people to resume work if their higher-ups don’t come to meet us. We have stopped their work and if they begin the work, we will file a police complaint against them, if required,” warned Gaonkar.
