PWD wanted: Citizens live in danger as they await govt agencies to attend to complaints

MARGAO

The dust kicked up over the February 14 Assembly polls has finally settled down, but citizens still await government agencies, such as the PWD, to attend to public complaints and save them from danger.

The PWD has been found wanting in two different situations, one at Benaulim and the other at the Old station road, posing danger to public life and property.

At Benaulim, a PWD water chamber abutting the main road near Maria hall is posing danger to motorists and pedestrians alike.

In fact, locals pointed out that the water chamber has been lying without any slab or cover for the last two months since December. A resident Rosario Barretto told the media that he had called the PWD on several occasions to cover the chamber and save the lives of the people but in vain. Left with no option, Barretto has now erected stones around the water chamber to act as a barricade and warning to the pedestrians and motorists.

Benaulim deputy sarpanch Nilesh Prabhudesai said the matter falls in the domain of the PWD. He, however, said the Panchayat will ask the PWD to act on the matter at the earliest.

The Human Protection Society has taken up the issue with a plea to the PWD to attend to the problem.

Society Mahila president Prathija Khan said the open chamber can prove costly if not covered with a slab immediately.

At the Old Station road, Margao, a railing over a cross drain has given way, but the PWD was nowhere to be seen to replace the broken drain. Instead, motorists have come across a cloth material acting as a makeshift warning sign installed in the cross drain after the railing collapsed inside the drain.

Local businessmen have demanded immediate repairs to the road and the railing over the cross drain and save the lives of the motorists and pedestrians.
