The Assagao Panchayat has rejected the No Objection Certificate (NOC) and trade license application for DNG Entertainment, which apparently planned to set up a controversial nightclub located in Mardungo-vaddo, Assagao.
This decision reflects the panchayat’s commitment to preserving the village’s ethos and addressing the concerns of local residents.
In a letter to local MLA Delilah Lobo, Sarpanch Hanumant Naik emphasised the panchayat’s stance against activities that could negatively impact the village.
“The village panchayat body believes that allowing a pub, nightclub, or disco in the village would adversely affect locals and the young generation, increase criminal activities, and harm society,” Naik stated.
Naik reiterated the panchayat’s duty to serve the interests of Assagao’s residents.
“We are elected members of the people of Assagao, and we are working for the betterment of the village. If anything affects the village negatively, the panchayat body will stand against it,” he added.
One, Gaurav Makhija had applied for the NOC and trade license on behalf of DNG Entertainment, located on survey number 224/2 Mardungo-vaddo, Assagao.
Although DNG Entertainment was previously granted a bar and restaurant license, it lapsed and was cancelled at the proprietor’s request.
The property owner, Tiburcio D’Souza, has since requested regularisation of the structure.
The Assagao Badem Citizen Action Committee, along with various local devasthans, strongly opposed the nightclub. They cited potential public nuisances and negative impacts on the community as primary concerns.
The panchayat has also appealed to the Deputy Town Planner, Mapusa, to conduct a joint site inspection to further assess the situation.
The panchayat’s decision aligns with the sentiments of many Assagao villagers who have previously protested against the establishment of the nightclub.
Highlighting the potential adverse effects on societal values, particularly among the youth, the villagers have demanded the cancellation of the NOC for DNG Entertainment.
The panchayat has requested MLA Delilah Lobo’s support in this matter, seeking her cooperation to protect the village’s interests and prevent any activities that could harm the community.
The rejection of the nightclub’s NOC and trade license by the Assagao Panchayat underscores the community’s unified stance against developments that threaten its traditional values and societal well-being.
