Young Sanjana Chari is set to get elected unopposed to the Dramapur-Sirlim Panchayat from two OBC reserved wards “ a record of sorts in the Panchayat election.
But, with Monday being the last date of withdrawal of nomination papers, Chari has a task cut out for her, to take a call whether she wants to represent Ward No 3 or 4 in the Dramapur-Sirlim Panchayat for the next five years, for the simple reason that Chari is set to get elected unopposed from the two wards since there was no other candidate in fray in these wards.
The options before Chari are two-fold: either she can withdraw her nomination paper from one of the two wards, or get elected from the two wards and then quit from one of the wards to pave way for a bye-election. “I have still not decided how to go about. I will consult my seniors and supporters how to go about before the withdrawal”, Chari told The Goan.
For the young nurse, this is her first shot at Panchayat politics and her decision to dabble in grass-root level politics has paid dividends. Though a voter of ward no 4, Chari says she had decided to also file her nomination paper for the neighbouring ward No 3 since there was no candidate willing to file their papers. Incidentally, both ward No 3 & 4 of Dramapur-Sirlim Panchayat have been reserved for the OBC women.
When The Goan contacted Returning Officer Manoj Korgaonkar to shed light on Chari’s election, he pointed out that Chari has an option either to withdraw from one of the two wards or take certificates of her election from the two wards and resign later. “If Chari decides not to withdraw her nomination from both the wards, I will issue her the election certificates from the two wards. It’s purely her decision”, Korgaonkar added.
The process for withdrawal of nomination papers will begin at 10 am and end at 2 pm.
