MARGAO
The South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has come under the scanner of the PWD, Sewerage and the Margao Municipal Council.
Even as the SGPDA is on the job in its mega retail market to de-silt and clean up the drains before the onset of monsoons, the effluents released by the drains in the adjoining storm water nullah has thrown up questions in the PWD and MMC circles.
With the issue of rampant sewage and waste water discharge in the Municipal drains and storm water nullahs under the close scanner of the High Court in the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Navelim resident Prof Antonio Alvares, the discharge of both waste water from the market into the storm water nullah at Old Market has triggered a debate of sorts.
In fact, the PWD, Sewerage has mulled urgent action towards containment of sewage discharge from the SGPDA fish and meat retail market at Margao.
The Executive Engineer, PWD, Sewerage in a letter to the Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaursh Sankhwalkar earlier this month has stressed on the need to set up a proper effluent treatment plant for effective treatment of the waste water generated in the market.
In fact, the PWD has pointed out that the waste water effluents released by the meat selling shops/ stalls in the SGPDA market cannot be discharged in PWD sewerage network as the characteristics of such waste water have parameter standard higher than the values mentioned in the Goa Sewerage System and Sanitation Services Management Rules 2010.
The PWD’s letter to the Margao Municipal Council pointing out that the SGPDA or market authority should construct proper effluent treatment plant to treat the waste effectively has raised a question whether the MMC place the letter before the Court when the matter comes up for hearing later this week.
