The Cinephile Film Club and MAMI (Mumbai International Film Festival) Year Round Program will present 15 diverse films from South Asia, from April 11 to 14, at the Maquinez Palace Theatre, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), Panaji, comprising both feature-length and short films, along with a documentary.
Curated by Sachin Chatte, who is also a part of the MAMI selection committee for non-feature films, the lineup includes award-winning films and promising works from emerging filmmakers.
The feature film on the opening day, April 11, will be ‘Against the Tide’, the acclaimed film that has travelled around the globe and has won several awards including the Golden Gateway at the MAMI last year. Sarvnik Kaur, the director and Koval Bhatia, the producer of the film will be present for a Q&A.
‘Shivamma’ directed by Jaishankar Aryar and produced by Rishabh Shetty will be filmed on April 12. The film has also won accolades at international festivals, after it got premiered at Busan last year.
Among the short films, Shambhavi Kaul’s outstanding experimental film ‘Slow Shift’ (on April 11), shot in Hampi will be screened along with ‘The Blessed and The Damned’, ‘The Last Fragment’ (Aakhri Tukda) (both on April 14), ‘Dentures’, ‘Melody Day’ (both on April 11) and ‘Goodbye, Hello’ (on April 12). ‘Windhorse’, a story of a father and son by the America based Nepali film maker Sunil Gurung (on April 14) and ‘Thirty’, about a lady who wants to be independent by 30, by Burmese director Ei Mon Kyaw will also be shown at the festival (on April 11). ‘The Flamingos and Other Migratory Birds Tour’ by Pranjal Dua (on April 14) and ‘Flowering Man’ by Soumyajit Ghosh Dastidar, both students of FTII whose film was showcased at MAMI will also be screened on April 12. Besides, ‘Summer of Soul’ will be screened on April 12 and ‘Giallo’ on April 14.
On April 14, ‘Zende’, an informative documentary on Madhukar Zende, the police inspector who arrested Charles Shobhraj at the O’Coqueiro restaurant in Porvorim back in 1984, will be screened. The 86-year-old retired policeman will be present for the screening, along with the director and producer of the film. The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
The screening is free for members while non-members can pay Rs 250 for the whole festival or Rs 120 for each day, at the venue.
