Rains lashed Sattari and several roads were submerged in Valpoi town, while electricity was also disrupted in many villages across Sattari taluka on Friday evening.
Several motorists were taken by surprise and many vehicles, especially two-wheelers, were stranded due to the flooded roads. Farmers have feared heavy losses to their crops on account of the heavy rains.
The rains began pouring at about 3 pm and over the next two hours, areas around the Valpoi Community Health Centre (CHC), the market area and Sri Hanuman Temple premises were submerged, causing disruption in traffic.
A 300-metre stretch of road near the Valpoi CHC was flooded and traffic was disrupted for almost 2 hours.
When contacted, Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) Chairperson Sehzeen Shaikh admitted that people were affected due to the heavy rains and flooding in many places in Valpoi.
“Our municipal workers rushed to the spot and did a good job of draining out the water in many places, thereby clearing the roads and restoring traffic,” said Shaikh.
An official at the Valpoi Fire Station stated that no untoward incident was reported in any part of Sattari taluka.
“Some vehicles got stuck in some parts of Valpoi town due to flooding and Firefighters helped pull out the vehicles,” said an official.
The heavy rains are expected to cause heavy losses to farmers in Sattari taluka as paddy fields in many areas were flooded.
Water levels in the rivers have also risen in Sattari taluka and turbidity is expected to adversely affect the Dabose Water Project, which could lead to problems in providing water supply to Sattari taluka.
