When students at the Government Primary School were recently shifted to the ground floor of the new Sanjay School building in Bogda, they were expecting better days after seeing the improved infrastructure and facilities.
On the contrary, all four primary classrooms have been flooded with rainwater, causing considerable anxiety among students, parents and teachers, so much so that some parents have even refused to send their children to school.
According to sources, students at the Government Primary School were recently shifted to the ground floor of the new Sanjay School building, while the upper floors have been allotted to the Sanjay School.
However, rainwater began entering all four classrooms on the ground floor, causing severe hardship to students and teachers.
“The government primary school comprises four classes but with rainwater entering classrooms, students of all four classes have been made to sit in one classroom,” said the source.
“Some parents have refused to send their children to school, while some other parents and teachers have requested the Mormugao ADEI to temporarily shift classes to other classrooms in Sanjay School building till the issue is resolved,” the source added.
Another source claimed that the reason for accumulation of rainwater was the absence of proper drainage system in the new school building. Voicing concern over the situation, a staffer said: “With heavy rains, the classrooms have been flooded with rainwater and students have to sit in ankle deep water.”
“We fear that children could fall sick and parents could blame the school and us for negligence. The issue has to be resolved immediately,” the concerned staffer said.
Local councillor Nilesh Narvekar has raised questions regarding the quality of work executed by the contractor. “People are approaching us and I do not know whom to blame. Innocent students have been made to suffer while the contractor has disappeared after the work.”
“There is no proper drainage system and the contractor has not done the job properly,” said Navelkar.
Mormugao Assistant District Education Inspector David Noronha said
efforts were afoot to resolve the situation.
