What was feared all along has come true at the world famous Colva beach.
If domestic tourists had in the recent past had a narrow escape from lamps falling down from poles, a tourist, believed to be a native of Rajasthan died due to electrocution at an ornamental lamp post near the toilet block at the beach.
Locals pointed out that the incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening when the deceased reportedly came in contact with a live wire of an ornamental lamp. He died instantly at the spot. Pointing out negligence, locals have demanded a thorough probe and fixing of responsibility.
Colva police believe that the deceased was either trying to get down on the beach or come on the wall by holding onto the lamp post. It is believed there was a power leakage at the lamp post as a result of which the middle man, in his 40’s, died due to electrocution.
The police said the deceased from Jaipur-Rajasthan was declared brought dead at the South Goa district hospital.
The incident only brought to the fore that all is not well with the illumination under the Colva beautification project carried out at Colva. The Goan had last month reported how domestic tourists had escaped from the falling lamps on the beach square.
In fact, most of the ornamental lamps installed at the beach square and along the beach, have fallen down. This fact was brought to the notice of the Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte by local residents, with Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas even complaining of the substandard nature of the work executed at the beach.
Though the Tourism Minister had promised to order a probe and fix responsibility on the substandard nature of the work, it’s still unclear whether Khaunte has set in motion the promised inquiry till date.
