Rebellion has hit the Benaulim Congress after the party leadership settled in for the candidature of Block Congress president Edwin Barretto.
After losing the race for the Congress ticket for the Benaulim seat, Maria Rebello on Tuesday has resigned from the primary members of the Congress, saying she has been betrayed and humiliated by the Congress, whose women empowerment is only a cheap street talk and a road show.
In her resignation letter, Maria said that State Congress president Luizinho Faleiro and his supporters want women as supporters all their lives without being allowed to represent.
She recalled her sacrifice in 2012 when she sacrificed her prospect to be a MLA and supported the Congress candidate in Benaulim even when her brother contested, while demanding to know “if this is not enough, what it is”.
Maria said she will advise respected people not to lower themselves to humiliating levels in trying to contest on the Congress ticket because the Congress squeezes the life out of enterprising Congressmen and women. “I will also advise people not to involve themselves with the Congress leaders till people like Luizinho Faleiro are wiped out," she said.
Maria was scheduled to go into a huddle with her close supporters to take a final call whether to contest the coming election as an independent or on a party banner. As tomorrow is the last for filing of nomination papers, her supporters pointed out that a final decision would be hopefully taken later tonight whether to contest as an Independent or on a party banner.
