The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) Chairman Bhagirath Shetye announced the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results on Monday in which 23,900 of the 23,967 students (99.72 per cent) were declared passed.
The public exam, a crucial milestone in a student’s academic career, was cancelled this year due to the ravaging second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic infections and like all other boards in the country came up with an objective scheme to tabulate the results based on the assessment of internal tests conducted by schools throughout the academic year.
As many as 4982 students scored 80 per cent and higher in the examination, he added. Around 10,276 students scored between 60 and 80 per cent marks, 7001 students got between 46 and 59 per cent while 2,231 students were in the range of 33-45 per cent. Only 67 students scored less than 33 per cent and were declared unsuccessful.
According to the objective assessment policy based on which School result committees prepared the marks tabulation of each student, 25 marks each were allocated for the formative tests I and II conducted through the year in non-practical subjects and 20 marks each for the practical subjects.
Another 20 marks were collectively allocated for the term exam, Unit test, Periodical test, Preliminary exams and year-end assessment and 10 marks weightage for the performance of the student in the previous academic year in class IX.
Shetye who was accompanied by Board Secretary Geraldine Mendes said at the press conference that students who are unhappy with their scores will be given an opportunity to answer an exam which will be conducted in schools.
A model question paper will be provided to the schools by the board and at least ten days notice will be given to students opting to answer the exam, Shetye said, adding however that the students will have to forfeit the marks obtained by them through the present evaluation criteria.
Shetye said a separate exam will also be held for the few hundred students who have “failed” as also those students who were registered as private students and/or last year’s ATKT students who had no internal assessment. Again, the board will give at least a 10-day notice to the students.
This year’s 99.72 per cent pass percentage is the highest ever in the history of the Board, Shetye said, adding that it is after a long 20-year gap that the Board is announcing the SSC result before the HSSC numbers. The last time this happened was way back in the year 2001.
The pass percentage last year when the Board held the exam in the early days of the pandemic in May-June, the overall pass percentage was 92.69.
Two talukas -- Sanguem and Dharbandora -- which had 510 and 415 students registering for the SSC exam had the distinction of 100 per cent results. Salcete had the highest number of students registering -- 5085 -- and 99.7 per-cent of them were declared successful.
Meanwhile, students wishing to opt for the Science stream in class XI or for post-SSC diploma courses will have to answer an ‘entrance test’ the date for which is yet to be finalised. So far, 6,744 students have registered for this entrance test already, Shetye said.
