MARGAO
Pointing out that Hospicio’s crumbling infrastructure cannot cope up with the increasing surge of patients, three-time Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday wondered how many more months, if not years, will the Goa government take to complete the long-delayed South Goa district hospital.
Addressing the media, the Curtorim MLA questioned Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to explain what happened to his promise given to him in the form of a written reply in the Assembly in December 2017 that the district hospital would be ready by May 2018.
“While answering to my LAQ 002C on August 4, 2017, Health Minister Vishwajit P Rane had stated that expected deadline for the commissioning of the hospital was May 31, 2018,” he told the media, while demanding to know the status of the committee which the government had specially constituted for the timely construction of South Goa district hospital.
Saying that health sector is not a priority for Manohar Parrikar’s government and that the construction of the district hospital is progressing at a snail’s pace, Reginaldo said the BJP after taking over the State government since March 2012 has failed in the deadline of its completion.
“It seems the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) which is implementing the project has come to power entity and behaves like an extra constitutional authority and has no regard to abide by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s deadline of May 2018 given to the August Assembly,” he said.
He said the people of South Goa are suffering on the health front for want of a district hospital and the crumbling Hospicio infrastructure, adding that Hospicio functioning is hit by insufficient number of beds, dearth of doctors, specialised testing units et al. “Looking at the current sluggish speed of construction, it seems very unlikely the South Goa District Hospital will operationalise any time from now,” he added.
