Among the list of proposals, the Goa State Industrial Development Corporation (GSIDC) is considering setting up of a water recycling system in addition to its already existing Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
The STP currently takes care of the water for gardens and plans are to use the water for flushing toilets as well.
According to officials at the GMC, when the hospital was first setup, there was one bore well that was dug to cater to the hospital at the time. Since, then the entire establishment has been functioning on water supplied by the Public Works Department (PWD).
The WRD has also considered using rainwater harvesting as a method of generating water for the hospital.
They are also considering taking up of reviving the bore wells.
Speaking about the water shortage, GMC Medical Superintendent Dr Sunanda Amonkar said it was not only patients but their family members, students and staff that were using water.
“In a day, there is not only the patient population that needs to be looked at. The OPDs themselves receive 1,500 patients a day, most accompanied by a family member. Then there are students studying here. Staff account for 3,200 people. So there are anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 people using the hospital and its services in a day,” she said.
According to Amonkar, there could be several possible explanations to the reduction in the water supply. The cyclic pumping of water from a source tank to the overhead tanks may take time to get filled, she said, as a result of which the taps may remain dry for a while. Another reason she says may be the issue pertaining with the fluctuation in water supply.
Currently the hospital receives a few hours of water per day and has to rely on as many as 14 water tankers each day, all of which are also supplied by the PWD.
