“Mapusa Municipal Council has been deviating from the policy of the State government of giving employment to sons of soil and instead giving preferential treatment to non-Goan vendors,” said Mandar Parsekar, President of Shiv Sena in Bardez.
He said though the government has been tom-tomming of attempts to give boost to agriculture in the State through its vision and policy documents, but in reality it has been discouraging and humiliating local farmers.
In a memorandum addressed to the MMC chairperson, the Shiv Sena has said 80 per cent self-employment opportunities be given to sons of the soil in Mapusa and other markets in Bardez.
It has also demanded special identity cum licensing cards be issued to all the vendors. It has also urged the authorities to provide protection to the vendors who mainly comprise women folk.
The memorandum has further said no double or multiple tax including Sopo tax be collected from these vendors so that their exploitation is stopped. “No multiple spots or outlets should be provided to the same vendors and no one should be allowed to sub-let these spots or outlets,” Parsekar said.
