The female body found in an open forest area of the Pillem locality in Dharbandora on Monday has been identified as that of a Bengaluru woman allegedly murdered by her lover following an argument over their relationship issues, Goa Police has said.

Sanjay Kevin M, also from Bengaluru, was arrested in Hubli on Tuesday by a team of the Ponda Police, who were assisted by their Hubli counterparts, according to South Goa Superintendent of Police Tikam Singh Verma, IPS.

Sanjay Kevin has reportedly confessed to murdering the woman after arguments over relationship issues during their bus trip to Goa.

The two were in a relationship for five years, and she was murdered by having her throat slit with a knife after they alighted at Pillem in Dharbandora, Verma said.

On Monday morning, the discovery of the woman’s body in an open forest area by locals was reported to the Ponda Police Station, following which Police Sub-Inspector Ashish Velip initiated preliminary inquiries, which revealed it was a murder.

A case under Section 103 of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered, and Ponda Police Inspector Vijaynath Kavlekar joined in supervising the investigations, including a thorough crime scene examination conducted along with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, the dog squad, and technical experts.

Verma said that a specialised team was deployed to analyse surveillance data, and the accused was identified as Sanjay Kevin M of Bengaluru, who had fled to Hubli after committing the murder.

“With the assistance of the local police in Hubli, he was traced and apprehended early on Tuesday morning,” Verma said.

The victim is also from Bengaluru, and the accused has confessed to the murder and stated that they were in a relationship for five years, he added.

“He admitted to having an argument with her during their journey to Goa and murdered her by slitting her throat with a knife after deboarding the bus at Pillem, Dharbandora,” Verma said.
